Celebrities Vs Parents… Who will win?
People all over the world have someone they look up to. When someone is asked “who inspires you the most?”, the most common answer is either a parent or a celebrity. The environment of a child molds them into the person they will become as adult. Two of the biggest influences in their lives are parents and celebrities. There are positive and negative influences in both sets of role models. Seeing behavior of other people affects their mental and social development as they grow. It seems today that younger children are trying to act older than they actually are. Pressure from parents and celebrities could be responsible for this behavior and change in identity.
Family is the primary institution in the lives of individuals, with mother being the first teacher. In fact, parents are the initial influence in their children’s lives. If parents have good morals and confidence so will their children. But if children see their parents displaying negative behaviors such as smoking, or abusing drugs and alcohol, or even processing low self-esteem, they will believe it is acceptable and are more likely to do so. Actually, the kid looks at the lifestyle of their parents and tries to adapt with them, therefore following everything that they looks at. On the other hand, celebrities can have positive and negative effects too. In fact, some celebrities participate in community service and try to encourage others to help people in need as well. But negative influence is instilled in their fans.
For instance, girls are pressured to be skinner and prettier, because that is what they see women look like in magazines. Unfortunately, sex sells and the media know that. Indeed, “88% to 92% of the top twenty five box office hits since 1995 have contained tobacco use; celebrities have glamorized smoking in the media and are setting an example for supporters everywhere that it is acceptable to smoke.” It is also dangerous for children and teens to become obsessed with celebrities and everything their lives entail. Thus, the infatuation takes over their own lives.
In conclusion, celebrities and parents actions both can have huge impacts on lives. Parents, being the first influence in a kid’s life, can affect in the best possible manner by helping them to develop good personalities full of quality, and ethical and moral values, or the exact opposite. And secondly, there are so many negative role models in the media, yet there are so many good ones. Instead of young people aspiring to be a doctor or a teacher, they all want to be the next winner or next top model. Most parents realize how big of an influence they have on children, but do celebrities understand how much they impact fans?
