Andrew Lloyd Webber is a music composer who has created many popular and famous musicals. He was born March 22, 1948, in London, England. His family includes his mother, Jean Hermione, his dad, William Lloyd Webber, and his little brother, Julian. His mother was a piano teacher. His father was an organist, composer, and worked at The London College Of Music as a director. His younger brother was also a composer and a cellist. Since his family was into music, it made sense that he would aspire for a career in music. In 1972, he married a woman named Sarah Hugill, but became divorced in 1983. Before divorce, Sarah gave birth to Nicholas Lloyd Webber and Imogen Lloyd Webber. Nicholas is now 38 years old, and Imogen is 39 years old. In 1984, Webber was married to Sarah Brightman until becoming divorced in 1990. Since 1991, Andrew Lloyd Webber has been married to Madeleine Gurdon. Their three children include, Alastair Adam Lloyd Webber, William Richard Lloyd Webber, and Isabella Aurora Lloyd Webber. Alastair is 25, William is 24, and Isabella is 21. When Webber was very young, he could play the piano, violin, and the french horn. As a child he composed many pieces, but even with all of his musical knowledge he dreamed of becoming England’s chief inspector of ancient monuments. In 1965, he entered Oxford University as a history major. Later that year, he dropped out of school to work with Tim Rice. In conjunction they worked on musicals and songs. Tim and Andrew’s show “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” debuted in 1968, and would later become their first success. After the success of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” Webber and Rice had created “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 1971. “Jesus Christ Superstar helped Webber rise to fame, after the musical became a massive hit. After 3 years, Webber decided to work with the British playwright, Alan Ayckbourn. Together they conceived the musical, “Jeeves.” It wasn’t a tremendous success in the end. Later in 1976, Webber banded together with Tim Rice once again to create “Evita.” After releasing a concept album that was very popular, the musical became a hit when it debuted in 1987. The musical, “Cats” was released in 1981. Webber based this musical off of a book called “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and other poems” by T.S Eliot. It was an enormous success when it played in London. In London, “Cats” ran from 1981 – 2002, which was for 21 years. One of Webber’s most sensational shows was exhibited in 1986. The show was “The Phantom of The Opera.”According to the website IMDb, “‘The Phantom of the Opera’ became the highest grossing entertainment event of all time, with total worldwide gross of 3,3 billion dollars and attendance of 80 million.” Since there was such a vast number of people who watched the musical, many must have appreciated the performances. The musical was also based off of a french fiction called “Le Fantôme de l’Opéra” written by Gaston Leroux. Eventually, Webber and Harold Prince worked together to create a movie version of “The Phantom of The Opera” in 1989. In 2010, “The Phantom of The Opera” celebrated its 10,000 th performance. This shows that audiences kept coming back for more due to its popularity. In 1998, he made a film based on his musical, “Cats”. He released two more musicals including, “Sunset Boulevard”, in 1994. The other musical was “Whistle Down The Wind, in 1998. Neither of the musicals were successful. In 1992, he was knighted and became Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. He’s won about seven Tony’s, a Golden Globe, two International Grammys, seven Oliviers, three Grammys, and many more. In 1980, 1983, and 1988 “The Phantom of The Opera” won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music. I think that Andrew Lloyd Webber should be remembered. He helped introduce the world to his outstanding music. His musicals inspired others to write music or shows of their own. He made wonderful forms of entertainment that included a diversity of cultures. Webber wants everyone to learn and recognize the importance of the arts. This is why he created the “Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation”, because he wants to spread the joy of the arts to everyone. They contribute grants to individuals for professional training. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation says, “Since 2010, the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has awarded over £17.5M to projects that focus on the enhancement of arts education and participation, improving access and increasing diversity across the arts, culture and heritage sector.” This means that they have given over $26,608,575 in Canadian dollars. He is an inspiration, whether it is in his music or plays, he spreads joy to others.
