Due to the devastating tragedy that has occurred with Hurricane Katrina the storm made a massive landfall where it was ranked category 3 on the hurricane scale. The storm left horrible damage in its after math, leaving about 80 percent of the city under water. With the water remain unhealthy and contaminated are becoming life threating it is our job as a Director to address this devastating news, and it is my job to make sure the community remains safe.

We have teamed up with American Red Cross to help provide clean and purified water for everyone once we address the announcement about the contaminated water. American Red Cross wills also assists us in helping communicating with the community who is in need. The advantages and challenges that we will possibly get from the help with the American Red Cross is possibly trying to communicate through the Internet. Usually when heavy storms and hurricanes occur it will most likely knock out all electricity.

Another advantage we as an organization might encounter would be having the help from the American Red Cross. We would have the advantage of them coming out with their equipment and their volunteers to help assist with supplying the necessary supplies to provide to the community such as clean water, and or anything else the community might need to stay safe. A challenge we might come across when trying to communicate with the public is trying to communicate through cell phone. Knowing the cell phone users might have service, but knowing they will not have much power for long will be the question.

So it is our job as a team and organization to team up in a quick responsive way to be able to try to send out notifications to everyone affected by the tragic hurricane. The differences in the communication process when it comes down to trying to communicate in a crisis situation is the process and planning as you would in a regular situation. There can be steps when encountering communicating in a crisis situation likes this. The first step we can come up with is identifying the crisis communication team that way we can configure who will be coordinating what in the planning.

Then we will need to authorize a spokes person so they will be in charge of speaking to the organizations during the time of the crisis. While we chose a spokes person we also need to make sure they are trained and capable of speaking in front of the media about the crisis. Then we need to come up with established notification system that way we can create some sort of system where we can send out notification to the public to keep them updated on what is being done to keep them safe.

What will be the importance of planning the communication skills in a crisis situation will be to identify and knowing our stakeholders? What we mean by that is having helpers to contact important people to you on your contact list to let them know your status on where you stand on your safety in situations like this. Then along with the planning we would also need to have a brainstorming plan if a crisis like this were to happen again, and what we would do to improve from the last situation to make the next one better. Bernstein, 1996) Knowing that technology keeps improving better and better as we speak there would be different types of communication we would use in this form of situation. Well of course with everyone in the community losing power there would be no way in informing them through the media, but the media will come in handy making the announcement world wide that way we can reach out for help and have as many people who are willing to help supply with necessary supplies to help the community. Another way we can help through technology is through cell phones.

Just about everyone carries cell phones as their form of communication that way we can send our via sms messages so that everyone can be informed of the dangers and ways to avoid being harmed and that help is on the way. That would be a great way to enhance our way of communicating with everyone nation wide as well as the community. Through crisis situations like hurricane Katrina learning from the past will only help us in the future so with that being said technology might be used differently if this were to happen again is coming up with better crisis plans for everyone to go over in the community.

When the media tries to enforce to always set up a plan just incase you were in a crisis situation. No one usually takes what he or she says in consideration, because they never think this could happen to them. Now learning from Hurricane Katrina, people are more aware of their surroundings when it comes to situations like this. They will begin to become more alert, and prepare to keep their phones charges at all times so that way when they do have electricity they will have a plan laid out to make sure they contact close family first to let them know their current status in this situation.

Then of course once a crisis begins to happen the media gets involved and by the media getting involved we will have opportunities to come across. The main things the media will target once a crisis like this comes along is recognizing that there is a crisis. Then being prepared for all the ambush of the media filled with questions wanting answers. Then making sure you are doing the right thing, also do not ignore the media when you are being seen, because they are the only source of media we have at the time to inform the nation about the problem.

Also make sure when talking, talk about the people first then the damage then the money. So in this situation with the announcement on the water being contaminated that will be our next step in letting the media know about this life threating situation that way some how we will have help on the way to fix this problem. Then most importantly keep your eyes on the media to make sure there is no incorrect reporting at the time. (Crisis Media Management, 2001)
