Jack London had many brilliant quotes, one of them being: “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time”. This quote speaks of how man want to use the time they have to make it last longer, when our true purpose is to live our limited days to the fullest. If we are all going to perish anyway, why try to prevent it by preventing yourself from having the fun we are meant to have and experience. In life, when people that are participating in crazy activities—such as extreme sports—they are living their life to the max by looking death in the face or just being anything they want to be, because that is the point of life. They are choosing to do this, making living—even if it may not be that long—more worth it. In the movie Dangerous Minds, the teacher—played by Michelle Pfeiffer—wrote the sentence “I choose to die” on the board. Then one of the students explained the sentence to the class, saying that we all choose to die. Whether you choose to let something kill you, or you choose not to let something kill you. We are choosing not to die in the moment, and when we do die, we are choosing to die. When people die, they chose to take the path that got them there. People are meant to live the life they want to live, living how they want to live it. But most people live life only so they can live it longer. What is the point of life, if you only try to prolong it. “Cause you only live forever in the lights you make” is a great way to describe the real meaning of life. When the band My Chemical Romance wrote the song ‘Kids From Yesterday’, they thought about how they are grown up, but they grew up their way, and that is the only way to grow up. And the song being about how it is okay to grow old, you can still do the things you love. That you’re not an adult, you’re a kid from yesterday. You lived most your life, but you can still live it. Most people think, ‘I must live my life as long as I can’, but humans weren’t made to live to 150 years old. Sure some live to be 100 or 101, but not everyone. There was only one person to live to be 122, and that was before the 2000s. But what is the point of living, if you aren’t really living. For most people, Death is a scary thing, but really, you’re not alive till you die. Just like, you don’t know what hot is until you are cold. Or, you don’t know hunger till you eat. The quote from the beginning is just a way of saying, you can’t live life by not living, you can’t hide from death and do nothing, just so you can live longer. The man who said, “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time”, knows what he is talking about, he knows that you can’t live life in the dark. Now, bringing back to what was said earlier, doing extreme sports does just what we are meant to do, live our life to the fullest.
