Why do people smoke? “The answer is addiction. One of the primary ingredients of cigarette tobacco, is nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like many addictive illegal drugs, nicotine makes a smoker continue to crave cigarettes if they try to stop smoking.” If nicotines a drug that resembles an illegal drug, why is it still legal to use it freely? Nicotine is “a colorless, oily, water-soluble, highly toxic, liquid alkaloid, C 1 0 H 1 4N 2 , found in tobacco and valued as an insecticide”. Nicotine is highly toxic, and should be illegal. Smoking should be illegal because it is harmful to your health, the health of others and the environment. Over the years scientists have proven the link between smoking and a number of health issues. People don’t just smoke tobacco, they also smoke other drugs like marijuana, heroin, opium and crack cocaine. Smoking cigarettes leads to many horrible diseases and harms almost every organ in the human body. Smoking causes cancer causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis. All these diseases are just from nicotine, other drugs like marijuana have other health effects. Marijuana has many long term and short term effects and can lead to death (from overdosing) the short term effects include trouble thinking and remembering, bloodshot eyes, dry mouth, increased appetite, fast heart rate and slowed coordination. “When you smoke marijuana, THC and other chemicals travel from your bloodstream to your brain, THC causes the feel-good high.”4 People don’t just have to worry about overdosing, they also have to worry about a hidden smell less, tasteless, powerful drug called fentanyl. “A 3-milligram dose of fentanyl is enough to kill an average-sized adult male. Fentanyl, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is up to 100 times more potent than morphine and many times that of heroin.” These are just some of the reasons why smoking is deadly and must be outlawed. Most people who smoke drugs or cigarettes don’t think about the effect it has on their family. Smoking doesnt just harm you, it harms everyone and anyone around you. Second hand smoke causes about _____ adult deathes a year and about ______ infant deaths a year.
